How it Works

Neurotoxins reduce wrinkles and soften the skin through injections into target muscle areas for the temporary improvement in the appearance of lines associated with muscle activity. These injections relax the muscles by softening and eliminating wrinkles of the forehead, in-between the eyebrows, around the eyes, jaw (to reduce TMJ/square jawline), mouth, chin and other areas of the face and neck. They can also help with excessive sweating in the underarms and hands. Results are seen in 2-7 days with optimal results at 14 days. The treatment duration usually lasts 3-4 months.

Numbing is optional for neurotoxin treatment with either ice or a topical numbing cream. The majority of patients tolerate it well without assistance. These injections have minimal recovery downtime.

  • Visible bumps may be seen at the injection sites. These are normal and may last up to a few hours.
  • Neurotoxins will start to work in 1-7 days depending on brand and peak in about 2 weeks. Please note, if additional product is needed, it will not be injected until 14 days after your initial injection.
  • Do not lie down for 4 hours post injection.
  • Do not massage the treatment area.
  • Do not do strenuous exercise, use a hot tub or sauna, or any other activity that may elevate your core body temperature for 24-48 hours following your injection.
  • Do not get a massage, do microdermabrasion or any other activity that may put pressure on the injected area.
  • If your forehead was treated, do not wear a tight hat or headband for 24-48 hours.
  • You may cleanse your face normally this evening but please do not vigorously massage the injected area. Also, do not use any abrasive exfoliants or scrubs.
  • Bruising may be seen. This happens in a small percentage of treatments but will not affect your treatment results. There also may be some discomfort associated with it. Bruising should resolve within one week.
  • Cosmetics, moisturizers, lotions may be used the next day, but do not apply extreme pressure or do anything that may cause discomfort.
  • Exercising the muscles in the treated area may help the product get into the muscle faster, but has no effect on the overall efficacy of the treatment.
  • Headache may be a possible side effect. Stay hydrated, and/or take a Motrin or Tylenol should it occur.
  • Sensitive or blurry vision is possible for 2-3 days post treatment. Wear sunglasses and moisturize eyes with eye drops if needed.
  • Flu-like symptoms are rare, but may last 2-3 days. Fluids, rest, and Tylenol/Motrin may be used.

No, the discomfort is minimal with small light injections causing a quick sting. Sometimes, a numbing cream is added for further comfort of the patients.

There’s little to no downtime with neurotoxin injections. Most people return to their daily activities immediately, although minor swelling or redness at the injection sites may occur and usually subsides within a few hours.
